Mayor laments chasm between academia and decision-makers

TEHRAN- On Saturday, the Tehran mayor lamented the gap between decision-making centers and the universities.

Relations between universities and executive and management centers have not been institutionalized, and there is a great gap between universities and executive directors,” Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said at the inauguration ceremony for Science and Technology University’s new gateway.

Even those university teachers who take executive posts often distance themselves from universities, and this is not in the national interests, he noted.

He said no country can play a significant role in the international arena or claim to be independent if it doesn’t make scientific advancements.

The goals set by the 20-Year Outlook Plan can only be realized through a close relationship between scientific centers and decision-making centers, he pointed out.

The county has enough money and talent, but what is really lacking is proper management, he observed.

The pragmatic mayor said the Tehran Municipality has adopted a scientific approach to managing the metropolis.

He went on to say that the Tehran Municipality is tasked with providing services to citizens, adding that the municipality also pursues the two goals of creating jobs, which is the main national concern, and training forces in different fields for the management of the city.

“Attaining the municipality’s goals is only possible through cooperation with universities and scientific centers,” the former police chief stated.

Qalibaf ran for president in last year’s elections and finished fourth.
